Temp Gauge quit
The wires broke off of the sensor.. Are these wires strictly for the gauge or do they let the ecu know the car is getting hot to trigger the fans on?

The one wire sensor is for the guage and has nothing to do with the ECU.
The 2 prong sensor is for the ECU and thats the one that turns the ECU on and off.
The one that broke off is and easy fix

Replace the gauge with an Autometer now that you have an excuse to get rid of the stocker
But it sounds like you broke the ecu sensor...

It was probably the single wire sensor, as those break off easily. Happened to my P10, and i noticed it when my temp gauge never went up. Hehe.

do you have to drain the coolant to replace the one wire temp sensor?

Not if you're quick like daveracer. It'll start pouring out, but if you can change it quick, you'll hardly lose any and it'll be fine.
