You could have just had a bad alternator they go bad all the time.

I have had my battery on my car for 4 years I think and have had no problem with the Alt.

Miko is right one this. if your using more power than the alternator can provide to your electrical system so battery gets drained even while your driving. you could drive 300 miles and find at the end of your trip, the battery is too flat to start the car agian.

its like having your home electricity company not giving you enough power to run your fridge, tv and washing machine at the same time.

Good analogy, another one would be a house that can only take one heater at a time, thus when you run two it will blow a fuse. My friend actually has this issue with his roomate haha...
