Quiet as stock aftermarket muffler.
Is there any aftermarket mufflers out there that are as quiet as the stock setup (or very close). I am looking for something with a 2.5" inlet so I can use it with my current exhaust piping. I don't care about performance at all at this point....It is just so I can pass inspection. This is for my B13 SE-R. Any suggestion will be appreciated....But I will fail inspection if it is noticeably louder than stock.

I would suggest a good resonator and good cat if you don't currently have the two. I have yet to find a 2.5" aftermarket muffler without the supporting cast to sound like stock. Maybe there is something out there to come close to this test by idle, but once you start mashing the gas, they will flag you down, get back here! You FAIL! Lol

i just did some searching and have found nothing on the car failing inspection for having an exhaust.....as long as the cat is there it should be ok. unless they personaly do not like the exhaust and take it apon themselves to fail you. in witch case you call the state police and ask them specificly if the exhaust is illegal. i have done this here in MD and was passed. however my b13 had a full greddy exhaust that was legal.

There are two basic types of mufflers out there. "Straight through" and "louvered/baffled" mufflers. All (almost all?) OEM mufflers are the louvered/baffled design which makes noise suppression a top priority above everything else. Straight through mufflers have performance in mind, almost universally at the expensive of sound suppression.

Almost any decent OEM muffler with the correct demensions should get you decently quiet, assuming you have the stock resonator (pre-muffler) and catalytic converter in place.

If you must buy an aftermarket muffler, Flowmaster really has the louvered/baffled design down pat. This is in contrast to Magnaflow which is distinctly a "straight through" company.

Here in New Jersey they can pretty much do whatever they want...and I am getting my balls seriously busted at the inspection station. I currently have a large magnaflow resonator and a flowmaster 60 series muffler ( the quietest series)...it is not that loud. They are just being difficult at the inspection station. I have been there 3 times already trying to pass emmisions. I replaced the EGR system and finally passed emmisions today and then they tell me the exhaust is too loud, which you technically can not do. If they told me the exhaust was too loud on the first visit then that's a different story...they can't just keep failing me for different things every time I go back there. I already put some calls into the state and we will see what happens with that. I don't want to get into a rant about NJ inspection so I will end it at that. By the way the test has no decibal rating so it is up to the testors discretion wether or not it's too loud. I bet if I had a 1985 Camaro with open headers I would have passed.....I am angry now.

That should be plenty quiet. That should be quieter than stock by a large margin. =/

Sounds like it's time to get the authorities involved.

Good. That's the road you need to take now I feel. Stay on top of them and use the law in your favor.

ask him with a strate face if he would pass a camaro or mustang with flowmasters........then tell him that if he feels it is legal for him to fail you for your exhaust to have him call his inspection officer and you will not leave until he shows up.

That's bull**** if they are failing because they "think" it's to loud. They need to measure it with a meter and if you are below the legal dB level then they should pass you.
