How much money to install a cat back exhaust?
How much money is normally charged to install a cat back system? Including my little problem? One shop in town quoted me $150 to have this done. I'm thinking that is way too much money. This is a system for a 95-97200sx, I have a 98, so I have the longer cat and I need to have this exhaust shortened an inch and a half.

That's ridiculous, they shouldnt charge more than $40 to shorten and reweld the flange.

ive been quoted 99 bucks for a simple flange weld on a exhaust cutout a while back. so i guesis it dependson your area.

i would say try to install yourself first, just get the pipe cut and rewelded somewhere then take it home and try it.

Yes I was thinking about doing that as well. Since I have your guys attention, where should the cut be made? Should the cut be made near the flange, where it bolts to the cat? Or does it matter?

as long as its at a place where the piping is the same size, thats gonna be the cheapest route.

now, to keep the mounting spots right, youll probably want it cut closer to the cat side, just cause that should keep the mounting spot near the gas tank at the same spot, since u will be making up for the extra inch or so for the cat. my .02

Keep looking around. I can't see why you should pay more than $85 to get this done. Worse case scenario they charge you $35/hr for installation and it won't take them with a lift more than 1 hour to install it. It took me like 45 minutes to install mine without a lift. But I'm sure they will come up with another hour + "materials" I say around $85 tops.

Hey guys I was thinking about cutting it myself. It's only a piece of metal, I've cut metal pipes before. The welding part would have to be a job for someone else though. So on to the cutting, in this picture I have 2 spots marked for cutting. http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x295/ih8suvz/pipe.jpg red or blue? Make a decision. It's like we are defusing a bomb here.

Does it have any hangers on it right now? I can't tell too much from the pic.

With the pic you posted: Red, you cut then reweld, pretty straightforward. Blue, you could cut off the flange and the piping you don't need and weld on a new flange for a couple dollars more.

Either spot would work tho.
