Ok that doesn't sound so easy then, what is the thing mounted to, to keep it from shifting?

Well, I have lowjack on my car. Doesn't prevent anything but the minute my car is moved from its location the alarm on my keys goes off and I call the police and they can track where my car is going/at.

WHAT ABOUT THE CLUB?!

my list is pretty extensive lol.
I have a quick release with lock
Pager alarm with every sensor you can get, backup alarm mounted where you cant see it.
3 locks on each wheel
fuel pump switch mounted in secret location
and before you get out of the car lock the steering wheel position
I pay about 15 dollars a month for passive lo jack as well.
In two vents I have small but VERY VERY loud alarm horns mounted that are almost unbearable when you are in the car but they are backup as well and can be shut off until I disable the backup alarm with a key, so you cant cut the power to them.

Ok for those of you who want to know, here are some pics showing how the external and internal gear/shifter locks work/mount.

First the external one:
It uses a mounting bracket that's cut out of really thick steel. The lock has a slot in it and it slides over the top of this plate. It then locks in position with two screws. The screws are easy to remove, but when the shifter is locked in place the shifter and u-pin totally obstruct any access to these screws.
Here you can see the screws that hold the lock in place on the mounting bracket.

Here's a pic of the bracket with the lock removed:

and a pic of the bracket again.

It bends at the bottom and then mounts on the floor of the car with one way bolts. Often the bolts are installed from the bottom, and the exhaust then obstructs any access to them. The plate could also be welded to the car, but that's too permanent for me. This steel is thick. I tried bending it forward to adjust it for my new short shifter, but it won't budge. Going to have to take it to the shop for a new custom bracket.

And here is the second type. Internal gear/shifter lock. These are much neater, and come as std on quite a few cars sold here now. The only down side is you need to cut a hole in your console.

The pics are of the lock on my s13:

Lock in use - very tidy:

Unlocking the lock:

The pin. Here you can see how I had to grind it down (again to adjust it after installing a short throw shifter). Had to grind for quite some time, just to remove that bit of metal that you can see there!

Here's how it locks the shifter in place:

Lock pin installation bracket:

And here is the pin when not in use:

I really like the second one. Gonna have to look at that.
The Real deterent I use is to keep my car in my locked garage with a house alarm. Not everyone has a garage though. Hell I didnt have one up until a week ago when I moved to the new house.

I agree that second one is pretty slick! There aren't too many around which is a plus too, it isn't un-defeatable (that is all welded to sheet metal, and a tow truck wouldn't care) but is a very good deterrent I am impressed and that is hard to do

The way I did it was by buying a Sentra. Nobody wanted to steal it. Hell, they didn't even look at it. But seriously though, wheel locks are cheap, get a whole lug set, nobody is going to get them off. As for driving off with the car, nobody does that anymore, but if you want you can simply put in a fuel pump cutout relay, hide a switch for it underneath the rear ashtray. Lots of room there, easy and quick for you to get to, and nobody will ever find it.

^^^ what he said,

bur maybe get a small push button switch and hide it under the carpet somewhere in a unusual location. that way it's completely invisable to would be thieves.

I just remove my Fuel pump Fuse. Most people who are trying to steal a car will not sit and figure out why it won't start.
