Timing chain
Is there any how to's or write up's on changing out all timing components (chain/cam&crank gears/tensioner/guides/oil pump)? It looks somewhat strait forward. I want to do it myself since Nissan wants Big $$$. Any help in the right direction would be appreciated. Thanks!

The FSM outlines it perfectly step by step. I would consult that, but it is very easy, but that's relative on your how you are with your wrench...

i would pull the motor (i think it is easier out of the car), takes like 1-3 hrs (engine removal part) depending on how fast you are. if you can't pull the motor out without a problem, i would suggest getting help on the project. fsm has step by step instructions on how to do it and i am sure that it is on here or the undash somewhere. i have actually have never had to do one on a 2.0 yet unless re-building the motor. what is the reason that you have to replace the chain?

I figured since i'm replacing the waterpump (leaking) and the valve cover seal (leaking also) and oil pump why not just replace all the stuff at one time. Plus with 194,000 on the clock, why not? how long is the chain good for since it is the original? I plan on doing alot of autocrossing and High performance Driving Schools. Since texas has two/three good local tracks to take advantage of!

P.S. And i do have a FSM, but it says to remove the head for this and i've talked to someone on the phone who says you don't have to remove the head! I was just hoping that some of the members here would have a small write up w/pics so that i could go by.

Thanks Brian

IIRC, it tells you to remove the head since the oil pump (which is built into the front cover) has dowels that are inserted into the head. You can get around this, but in all honesty, if you're adding all of these other new parts, why not a fresh headgasket too? 194,000 is pretty high, and with the way SR's cool on track, it could be cheap insurance. Removing the head is pretty easy as well.

If the guy told you that removing the head wasn't necessary, why didn't he tell you how to do it while he was at it? Sounds to me as if he was talking out of his rear.

what is wrong with the oil pump? if i were you i would replace the the water pump and v/c gasket and drive the car unless the chain is making noise. if i were going to do the chain i would do the head gasket, bearings etc etc etc with the engine out. i don't know what kind of condition your car is in since i can't see it here, doing the chain in the car would be a major pita

Damn, with all the $$$ he'll be spending in parts wouldn't it be easier to buy a jdm DE?

If i had to take the motor out or mess with the chain i would just yank the old one out and put in a fresh DE, just my 2 pennies

Then if i go ahead and buy a jdm motor, is it as simple as remove old engine and insert new one or is it not that easy? Who would you trust to buy a jdm motor from? And last but not least if i wanted more horsepower what would be the best way to go? How hard is it to get reliable 200-225 or maybe a little more out of an n/a motor or is that left to the awesome DET's that i see on this forum.

Thanks Brian

well you can get a jdm from Tigerjapanese.com alljapaneseengines.com or through Miko.

And yeah it costs less $$$ to buy a DET to obtain 200-220 hp.

bluebird motor, MAF, ecu, walbro fuel pump, and instant 205 hp right outta the box.
BUT can never forget that when you upgrade one thing you have to upgrade everything.

And yes with a jdm just yank the old one out and install new one. it's straight forward.

( assuming you'd be using the usdm sensors )
