Det On A Auto Tranny!
I'm going to purchase a det for my 93 se-r so,What type of communication is between the ECU and the auto transmission, and is it important?

He needs to know what ECU to run with the DET and auto transmission. I wasn't sure, so I told him to post a question here.

Then he will have a reason to swap in a 5 speed.

I would talk to Calum if I were him.

that's a really good question. i don't know of many people who use autos when it comes to the DET. what about an auto DE ecu that's been set up for the map? calum would be the one to know, but i think he's out for a while because of the holidays.

Acutally, stock det power levels, you are fine on the auto. dont rag it in hot weather. or buy some extra coolers for the tranny.

the ecu and tcu are different. if you are just doing a det swap, just throw it in, get a calum ecu and thats it. yes the ecu's are a tad different, but the tcu controls shifts.

you CAN do a det with an auto. you can get up to about 225ish hp before the tranny really doesnt like it. but if you have lofty goals, use the time the engine is out to do the 5 speed swap...or buy a 5speed car and use the auto as a daily

but doesnt torque converter show significant drivetrain power loss when compared to manual tranny? seems like torque converter would just soak up all the power. i'd be willing to bet a stock DE with a manual transmisison would do better than a stock DET with an automatic transmission.

i wouldn't be so sure about that, autos are slow, but they're a good bit different when it comes to boost. they hold constant pressure, as long as you don't lift off, and with a simple adjustment of the bands, you can get them to shift fast and firm.. it just won't last anywhere near as long as a stock clutch would on a boosted motor.

but would a jdm ecu work correctly if he's using usdm sensors? sounds to me like you'd have to look at some of the wiring schematics, and verify everything is in the right position at the ecu.

I'm an SR retard, I don't own one, and haven't done anything, this is just general non-specific knowledge.
