Recommend me a radar/laser/VASCAR detector
.....that isn't like ridiculous with blue tooth or any of that crap, or more than $400+. Just want the basics. And yes, radar detectors *ARE* legal in my state, Pennsylvania.

I've NEVER had one before but here's why I want one now, a little story.. recently I was in the passenger seat of my friends Z06 on the highway, he was going WOT on and off as usual (and I yes I had a shit eating grin on my face - mofo MOVES) then I hear an alert go on and he jslams on the brakes and sure enough up about 150-200 yards there was a cop hiding behind some bushes that we passed. He was doing like 90 in a 65 and got it down like 70 and we were fine. A month ago I got nailed for 56 in a 40 and the fine was $180. It said on the ticket "VASCAR"

Link/recommend away, gentlemen!

Edit: I realize that not all scenarios work as perfectly as that, but now I'm sold.

Edit again: didn't realize VASCAR wasn't detectable

I have had a few high end radars over the years. To list them I have had;
Passport 8500 X50
Passport 9500ix
Valentine 1

I like the Valentine the most. However it does require some extensive set up and trimming of band selection for it to be any good.

As for you VASCAR issue, a radar detector wont help you here.

"A VASCAR unit couples a stopwatch with a simple computer. An operator records the moment that a vehicle passes two fixed objects (such as a white circle or square painted on the road) that are a known distance apart. The vehicle's average speed is then calculated by dividing the distance by the time. By applying the mean value theorem, the operator can deduce that the vehicle's speed must equal its average speed at some time between the measurements.

VASCAR can be used from a moving or stationary patrol vehicle, and the target vehicle may be travelling in the same direction, in front of or behind the officer. It can be approaching from the front, or even on an intersecting highway. This technique can also be used to determine a vehicle's speed from helicopters and other aerial platforms, making it easier to secure a conviction.

A 1991 study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that VASCAR-plus units produced errors of less than 2 mph if used correctly.[4]:xiii"

I can tell you exactly how this thread goes. Half of the people will tell you to get a Passport, and the other half will say get a V1.

I'm in the V1 camp myself.

D-Unit121 have you tried YAV1? It takes the V1 to the next level.

Haha. I actually do drive fairly slow. Every time I have a passenger, if it's a long trip, they inevitably make some kind of comment, not directly, but something like "Wow I thought we would had been there by now" - then I get in the car with my friend who is a U.S. Marine and he drives INSANE. Like 70 in 45 all day everyday. Cuts and weaves into traffic. Is pulled over often, and EVERY TIME I've been with him when its happened, he shows the cop his military ID and the cop says "OK have a good day, slow it down."

So I'm seeing a HUGE variety of detectors. Anywhere from $40-$800!
