tune-up cost for 4.0 jeep
I recently picked up a Cherokee. It was getting pretty terrible MPG so I figured it was time for a tune-up (I also changed the oil and the oil that came out was the worst I've ever seen).
Went to pull the plug wires to look at the plugs and I couldn't budge ANY of the wires. Never had plug wires be stuck on the plugs. So I'm pulling and twisting at them and the little voice in my head told me to stop or I was going to break something.
So I decide okay I will swallow my pride and consider paying some one to do a tune-up on it since I needed to get it done and I don't have a working backup car if I broke something. Figured I would call a Jeep dealer for a high quote and a Brake Team for the low quote just to get an idea. All I wanted done were plugs, plug wires, cap and rotor. I was thinking okay prob $175-$200 total..
Called Brake Team first. After being on hold for a while they come back to me with a quote of... $450!!!! I asked how that broke down and the guy said he couldn't tell me. I said that was outrageous and hung up.
Called the Jeep dealership not knowing what to expect, and they were actually cheaper, but still, $445!! They told me how parts of it broke down. For example $50 for plug wires and $60 to install. Cant remember how the rest broke down.
So I said fuck it and bought mid-grade (BW) cap, rotor, and plug wires, and champion plugs (jeep forum consensus). All for under $75 total. Could have got the parts even cheaper from rockauto but I had a free day and wanted to get it done. Used my Robo Grips to destroy the old plug wires to get them off.
I'm sure all those parts would cost the Brake Team about $35 and they would have used super cheap shit and prob not even gapped the plugs. Could not believe a $450 quote!
