Hmm very interesting.My 4.0 is pretty strong,but HELLO!!! This should be interesting.
Its not pretty though. whats up with the mismatched wheels

The Japanese brand is making a big push into the light-duty diesel truck market with its new Titan, which is set to sell with a 5.0-liter Cummins diesel powertplant with it arrives. But the brand isn’t convinced that it will be enough to offer a single diesel truck. The Frontier being shown today isn’t necessarily going to be built, but it might be if the brand decides there is enough demand.

“Nissan has always valued the mid-size pickup segment, and with this technical study project, we are looking to explore what is possible for the next-generation Frontier,” said Nissan truck boss Fred Diaz. “We are always looking for ways to engage our customers, innovate and take the segment in an evolutionary direction.”

The four-cylinder engine makes approximately 200 hp and over 350 lb-ft of torque and is slotted into a truck heavily based on the 2014 Frontier Desert Runner. A ZF eight-speed automatic transmission handles shifting duty sent to the rear wheels.

This should help with the biggest complaint of the Frontier, the gas mileage. I hear guys love their trucks but they get like 16mpg. The v8s out there are rated better in some cases. I think it's a great idea to have good torque in a little package. My only quarrel with it is no manual transmission? In my opinion I think that's what made Dodge so appealling in the past: a manual paired up with a Cummins turbo diesel. Of course, now I think that isn't an option, but it was great. Fred Diaz did great things with the Dodge trucks. I hope the Titan gets the boost it needs to play with the Detroit three.

But offering it in the Frontier is also great. Equivalent tow rating with much better mpg. Now if the maintenance costs were low....

My 05 Nismo 4x4 gets 16-17 avg,but I also have a lowere rearend gear with the Nismo Package.Had I noticed this before buying,I may have not gotten the Nismo.
I know some guys with the SE and LE models that get about 5mpg more with the taller gearing. Still sucks for a v6 for sure.

I just wish it was direct replacement so those of us who already have a D40 could get in on the fun! Hopefully the aftermarket can come up with a kit for it.

Looks awesome, have you seen the Pulsar SSS they offer in Australia? I'm hoping Nissan steps it up and offers something similar other than the Juke here in the states and gets rid of all those CVT transmissions they put in all their cars for some reason

This is cool but Nissan could have just used the 2.5L diesel it already offers in D40s and D22s around the world. Nissan could have been market leaders as nobody really sells a diesel mid size truck in the states.


You better believe there is a market there. I'd be all over a diesel mid size truck.

As for a diesel bolt in kit. Nissan already makes the parts to do that in a D22 or D40. For the expense though I just don't think the mpg increase is worth it. I'd estimate at maybe like 3k to do a YD25 swap.

The VQ40 is a very strong motor, and it's mpg rating is actually better than the older and smaller VG33.

I came very close to doing a YD25DDTi swap in my D21 a few years ago and had even sourced a 2yr old salvaged Nissan dually in Mexico...but couldn't work it out (cost effectively) to get it shipped. Now I see them on ebay occasionally but no longer have the hardbody...wouldn't mind finding another D21 though

I hope they DONT offer that paint scheme though...and yes, match the wheels.

We, "consumers", have been letting you know what we think for a long time...YOU JUST DON'T LISTEN!!!

the cummins motor has a very strong following so nissan looks at as they can get the cummins fans to start looking at nissan trucks because of the motor.

At work, (Nissan Powertrain, Decherd TN) we're always hearing rumors about developments. Good to see some of this hit the Auto shows.
