Even with equal length header, they still sound silly. Boxer is as boxer does.

@Vadim you know they use B13 Sentra in rallycross, snocross, icecross, whatever you want to call it and it beats out Subies fairly on the regular, right? I was going to buy some kind of vehicle that was either AWD or 4WD. Then I decided buying new tires is way cheaper so I went searching for tires there folks would utilize. My first choice was studded or non-studded. If your state uses salt, then I see little purpose to studs unless you want racing perks. Luckily since PA is the salt capital of the entire United States, I don't need a studded winter tire so I found what is the best non-studded winter tire, bought them, and changed my view on FWD in winter. Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 FTMFW.

Some folks go to drastic measures and re-chassis themselves for a multitude of reasons which are all fine and personal. As long as folks are happy, that is what matters in the end.

To touch on what @wildmane said, Yes, AWD is a huge marketing craze that EVERYONE in this country buys into. I still haven't seen an AWD F1 race car since the last one made in the 80's by Williams. Not worth the penalties taken on for that particular purpose.

So now we're back to "I don't like the way it sounds " what's next? "I just don't agree with that lifestyle?" lol

for the record I do love the way a B13 handles in snow. B14 not as much.

It's actually not even because they are unequal length (even though that's what they are referred to as in the community), it's because of improper cylinder pairing. Firing order is 1-3-2-4, and cylinders are paired as 1,3 and 2,4. Sure it is the sound of inefficiency, but it's cheap and efficient from manufacturing standpoint. 15whp can be gained from a $700 equal length header, dollar per whp is horrible, and you get the 4 cylinder rasp.

Now something to consider, NA Subaru's are not paired like turbo ones are, this applies to BRZ's too, thus NA's don't have rumble. Also 2010+ Legacy GT's, and now 2014+ WRX's, have 4-1 headers with turbo being mounted under the engine. No more rumble.

I see people on this forum complain about the noise, yet outside of car guys if you ask anyone which 4 cyl exhaust note sounds better/less ricey, they will always say the Subaru. American V8's do the same exact thing, improperly pair the cylinders, don't see anyone complaining about their noise.

That's awesome, which reminds me I need to get some pull ropes and keep them in both of the scooby's for this reason.[/img]

Oh I'm sure others who never owned loud Nissans or Toyotas etc would like the Subaru sound better. Not making any excuses, I know mine is annoying, and more annoying than Subaru, I just am used to it. But still when I hear a WRX take off down the road when I'm walking back to my car or something, it just sounds to me like something is wrong. I guess your explanation of the cylinder firing order explains that though and it's just how it is, just how B13's have doors that are too heavy, and SE-L's rust. Just how it is

You know I've owned plenty of Nissan's (and still do), and I still prefer the boxer rumble. NA Nissan's are as bad as Honda's, turbo Nissan's are very quiet, but are not throaty enough still. Here is a comparison vid I recorded when I had a VE/VE+T

Brother B13 doors are light compared to P11 doors. I have yet to really figure out why P11 doors weigh 200lbs. Heck they are so heavy that when I put my old P11 on it's side, my wife and I couldn't push the door up to open it!

Oh I hate that V8 sound. Hate it.

I do prefer that turbo Subaru rumble over most other 4-bangers though. One of those things...

That shitty water-filled V8 exhaust note is not from "improper pairing" of cylinders, that goes back to what Ben said about the unequal length header/s. That makes the ANY V8 sound like shit.

This thread is getting chock full of awesomeness so keep it up fellas.

The cross-plane crank V8s sound the way they do because of the improper pairing of the cylinders as Vadim said and the unequal timing of the cylinder firing. A good bit of the sound can be "fixed" by pairing the proper cylinders, a la the Ford GT. Although really, an incorrect length header or incorrect cylinder pairing is sort of the same thing when it comes to the sound. It is tough to fully overcome the sound of uneven cylinder firing, which tends to give a lub-lub-pause-lub-lub-pause sound.

I'd drive by in my Nissan, laugh and keep going. Even if AWD.[/img]

That AWD really worked well there, with all four tires spinning and whatnot.
