FRS is a hype from the AE86 which was in reality a crappy shit bucket. Even in initial D, the 86 had it's suspension all changed out and was specd for RACE and wasnt a stock 86.
I have freinds who have the brz/frs and when they dove my 20yr old stock P10 they are shocked how well it handles.
Frs/brz is a really nice balanced car and is in the same class as the miata. But in the end the S-car is still in a higher class
My buddy and I did a tiny run. He has a g35x. I pulled away just a little bit. I was surprised, as was he. The BRZ does ok. Especially since the BRZ is slow.
Trust me, there is no hype. The FRS/BRZ are the real deal. The AE86 was an inspiration to this car's end goal. To provide a fun, spirited drive in a lightweight rwd platform. I would absolutely love to see the BRZ and S15 in a lap battle. Of course, they would have to be on equal rubber. The stock rubber on the BRZ is rubbish, but it translates well to the fun character of the car.
As far as looks, I must be crazy. Because the BRZ is absolutely beautiful. I'll be putting on a set of these wheels and dropping it a little bit.
There should be no argument over which car looks better. They are both amazingly good looking. There is no doubt in my mind if the S15 were released here in the US it would cost a lot more. Probably close to 370z price. But regardless, Nissan doesn't have the nuts to bring something like that to market.
The biggest flaw the BRZ/FRS will see on the track is the lack of tire. It still beats the miata on the course, despite running grand touring tires. And it can match the times of much more capable cars with just a tire swap.
The engine is another topic altogether. Obviously, it uses a boxer engine. Although it has proven itself plenty capable of making over 550whp on the stock block, and has seen revs as high as 10k rpm on stock heads, only time will tell how capable the engine is over the long term.
Still, we can only dream of the showdown these two cars would produce!
