Uhhh yeah you can mess up on belts if it is a timing belt job
Accessory belts on the other hand are hard to mess up. I also work at a chain and we are crazy expensive.... 3x on parts that are out buys and even more when it is stuff that we stock. Then they pay the techs shit on top of it because they have to pay 8 million managers who do nothing but look at numbers all day and tell you that you need to sell more upgrades, ahhhhhhhhhhh! I hate my job but am stuck there until I find a new one.
Back on topic, as was stated before, timing belts need to be changed due to time or mileage, which ever comes first. They are rubber and crack over time. As far as $800 being too much or not we need to know what they did ie. timing belt alone, belt and water pump, acc belts, seals or pulleys and also what kind of car and engine. $800 is a decent price if it is all the pulleys, water pump, timing belt, accessory belts and seals for most engines.
