Issues on a 2000 Legacy
So my girlfriend just bought the car which seems like it was taken care of decently. However, like many subarus, it needs to have the headgaskets replaced. I've been told that I need to drop the engine to do them but so far, it looks like I have the clearance to pull the heads off which is good. This is my first run on a boxer engine and I must say it's nice to work on compared to our cars. Everything is right there, especially the pulleys and belts.

Anyways, that issue seems to be going well but it also has a few codes. I've done tons of research online and it seems like I can't pull up much detailed info on the Phase 2 EJ25 engine as far as codes go. One is an Intake Air Temperature sensor and circuit. Now, as far as I can tell, it doesn't have a designated IAT. The Haynes says it is on the airbox but only on the manual transmissions..... and it's an automatic. Is it part of the MAF/MAP? What is involved with this if the wiring is fine?

Thanks

Dave

2000 Leggy doesn't have AIT. Best to drop the motor down on the subframe to make quick work of replacing head gaskets.

Obviously while you're at it, change the valve cover gaskets and plugs since they're infinitely easier to get to with the motor dropped out.

What codes do you have specifically?

Ait is usualy part of the maf on those how many wires on the maf ? Have you checked the data stream to see if the ait is reading -40 ? If so its shorted open . Best bet to do the HG's is take the motor mount bolts out and jack the engine up if this is a SOHC 2.5 the heads can be taken off with out pulling the motor . Ive done quite a few of the famous subie head gaskets . They allways leak on the driver side rear lower corner of the head . Atleast the manifolds will be easy to remove as subaru was kind enough to use stainless studs and bolts .
Also if your goin to do the timing belt check into one of those continental timing belt kits it comes with the waterpump ,pulleys ,tensioner , and belt . Its a real nice kit !

I just pull the engine because it is so much easier to work on with it out of the car. You can do it in the car but when it takes me an hr or so to pull the engine, why not? Less headache for me but it is all a personal preference. I agree, the Conti tb kit is very nice, do all the pulleys. And yes, if you are getting an iat code, it is part of the maf.

The AIT codes are P0111 and P0112. There is also an evap control problem code. I can't remember what it is; something like P1446. Has to do with the solenoid for the charcoal canister behind the rear passenger wheel. One issue at a time though.

I'll look into that kit. You guys are really helpful. The gasket is leaking from exactly where you say haha. I like the idea of jacking the engine up as it is the SOHC. The valve cover gaskets and spark plugs will be replaced. especially since the driver's side plugs are kinda painful to get to.

There's like 4 sensors on the MAF so I don't entirely know where to start. But I'll pull them off one by one and inspect them and the wires around them. That area is really different than the Nissans I'm used to working on so it's a valuable learning experience.

Interesting. I learn something new everyday I had no idea the AIT was part of the MAF.

On its way to measuring mass air flow, a MAF gathers air temp as a side-effect. It can do double duty with one element if it has to. (Not saying that is the case here.)

Ok so I looked into the kit, and if I'm looking at the right one, it'll be 300 bones which she doesn't have. I'm already at least 300 into this with the new six-star headgaskets, radiator, valve cover gaskets, exhaust and intake gaskets, and spark plugs. Everything looks good and so I'm gonna take my chances I think. She only spent 1650 for the car with 210k on the clock. It just needs to last 2-3 yrs.

Correction on the other code: it's P0446 which is Evaporative Emmission Contrl System Vent Malfunction.

When I get home tonight I'll toy with the MAF and see what I can find. I hope I don't have to replace the MAF just for the AIT. Intake manifold to come off tonight as well as diconnect the rest of the wires/hoses.

How bad are the gaskets?

Call or text me I am sure we can work something out, I won't work on those cars but I can get you a better deal on the needed parts.
