HOW TO: DIY Fuel Pressure Gauge + 'T'
Hello,
So tonight I ran into a few problems trying to figure out a T fitting I bought for my fuel pressure gauge. It was supposed to be for a 5/16'' line but for some reason did not fit. I was pretty frustrated by this, but my car was out of commission so I had to do something.
So, I had to come up with another solution. Below is all you will need for a DIY fuel pressure gauge setup.
Get a fuel pressure gauge. This one is cheap and liquid filled (Summit SUM-800199 - Summit® Chrome Plated Fuel Pressure Gauges. Why liquid filled? Because your gauge will be taking a lot of abuse within your engine bay and the liquid filled gauge will be more reliable.
Buy two 5/16 to 1/8 barbed fittings for your hose. Like this: Gardner-Westcott Co. J9028 - Gardner-Westcott Hose Barb to Pipe Fittings
Or find one at a local auto parts store.
Go to a hardware store and get a Female 'T' fitting in the plumbing section in 1/8''. Looks kind of like this: Also pick up some screw-type fasteners to put over your fuel line to help keep it on the 'T'.
Get some Teflon Tape either at hardware store or auto parts store.
Pre-Steps: Disconnect negative battery cable and de-pressurize fuel system by taking fuse out.
Step 1: Take off the fuel line going between your fuel filter and the fuel rail.
Step 2: Cut it in half where you want your gauge to go
Step 3: Push your fuel line into the barbed fittings. Some white grease or other lubricant can help push it in.
Step 4: Put teflon over all threads on your gauge and barbed fittings. This makes a tight seal so fuel will not leak out. Screw in gauge, then screw on your 5/16 to 1/8 barbed fittings for the fuel line.
Step 5: Done.
Hopefully this simple guide will help those in the future looking to do this and will not have to go through the hassle I did.
Good luck!
