Nice thread. So if a person wanted to try and avoid 5th gear pop out, would using 4th gear for passing and hills and avoiding engine braking in 5th help avoid 5th gear pop out? I've been doing that for years but I didn't know if it was actually helping anything.

That might help a little bit. You might be able to prolong the onset of the problem a little by doing that stuff.

A bad motor mount can cause it to pop out under hard acceleration which would not be 5th gear pop out, Right?

That can be the beginning of the problem. If you fix the motor mount immediately you can prolong the inevitable for quite some time. If you don't fix it right away it will cause the dog teeth to chip away pretty quickly which is the real killer of the 5th gear. Even if you do fix it, it won't hold off the problem forever.
