It definitely did... read SHIFT by Carlos Ghosn (who you probably know as the CEO of Nissan, the reason they are still in business but also the reason all of the affordable cars are boring shit boxes now). In the early 90's each department within Nissan acted pretty much independently of the others... engineers were free to have fun and build cars they liked because they never talked to accounting... then they found out they were losing money on like everything after we already had R32, R33, GTiR, S13, B13, P10 and so on... Its a good read for any of you managers out there but its a frustrating read for us who like cars.
