So, I am about 25% of the way through my mini overhaul/tune-up of the RR in the P11. When I first got the car, it was stumbling under under load and you could feel the throttle breaking up a bit throughout the RPM range. It also seemed to be running a wee bit hot.
Well, so far I have replaced the plugs (with BKR6EIX-11), the plug wires (NKG), the cap and the rotor. What I noticed was a massive improvement in acceleration and idling. I am pretty sure that the plugs that were in there were the original plugs, with 194,000 km on them!
Let's just say that the ground electrode on two of the plugs were missing. Can't say the rotor head looked any different either. It was pretty much burnt. The cap? Lots of build-up. I don't think the previous owner knew what a tune-up was.
I also degreased the engine before I started with the under-the-hood work. It was filthy in the engine bay and probably didn't help the engine to run at it's coolest possile temp. All clean now!
Lastly, I bumped up the timing to appx. 18* BTDC and put some 94 in the tank with some fuel injector cleaner. I will see how it reacts to all of this over the next few days but the overall feel of the engine is much more responsive. The down-low response it noticeably improved.
Next on the list will be a new fuel filter (tomorrow), oil and filter change, trans flush/fill, coolant flush/fill. Then I will move on to a DIY med-length CAI and exhaust to let the car breath better. Also, I will clean the MAF and the IACV.
All in all, I am starting to remember what it was like to have a roller-rocker DE running at peak performance. The RR really is a responsive engine for a DD, especially with some bolt-ons. I am starting to be happy with this 4 banger!
I will post up some pictures of the spark plugs tomorrow.
Can a Mod move this thread to the
G20 sub-section? Not sure why I chose to put this in the
General NON-SR20 discussion section. Thanks!
