Thread: engine noise

i just recently purchased a 94 g20t . ive already replaced the distributor with the crank sensor built in, and the starter. but now its making a weird noise coming from the left side of the engine. sounds like metal pinging(when i am accelerating you hear it alot more, but at idle it is still noticeable) . i brought it over to the shop to have them take a look. ( i thought it was the water pump or pulley going, but it's not) even they dont have a clue what or where the sound is coming from. could it be the timing chain or belt tensioner? any help would be helpful

It could be the timing chain guard under the valve cover that's come loose. Most people ditch it.

so i would have to take the valve cover off to do that im guessing? is it right under it or i have to search for it?

It's easy as pie once you get the valve cover off. It is on the front (proper) of the engine right above the chain. Very simple to inspect and remove if you need to. Many people would tell you to remove it regardless.

While you're in there though you can also inspect the chain tensioner. Maybe remove it and inspect it.

i know im asking alot of questions , im sorry this is my first sr20 motor so i have to get familar with it. is the tensioner hard to get to and remove if it has to get replaced? ( meaning that i will be doing it and not bringing it to a shop lol)

If you look below the oil filter housing you will see a plate with a few screws and that's the timing chain tensioner. If you remove all the stuff in your way it will be easier.

I got the same noise its louder when its cold then after a few minutes after being runned it slowly goes away.
