I don't think they were effective as Nissan ditched them in the B14. The flimsy plastic clips that attached the insulation to the hood were supposed to melt at a certain temperature and thus allow the insulation to fall onto the motor assist extinguishing a fire.
It didn't really work, in fact I remember back on the SE-R mailing list someone thought it exacerbated the situation b/c the insulation pushed the flames/heat further down instead of up onto the hood.. odd fact
