Doesn't have to be in timing mode to see the marks. Mine weren't showing, but the outer ring on the pulley slipped. Once I changed it, marks showed up, and I never bother putting it in timing mode.
However, my crank pulley had a slight wobble to it before I changed it out, it still wobbles a little even after I put a new one in. Trey's doesn't wobble, so I'm not sure if his is bad.
