gpopshop.com Big T28 Upgrade
I had a turbo rebuilt by G-Pop Shop and took some pics to share. I bought a blown T25 on the cheap, just to have rebuilt. The original idea was to have it rebuilt for $350 and have a "brand new" T25 for ~$400. When G-Pop inspected the turbo, the turbine wheel couldn't be re-used. A new wheel would have bumped the rebuild cost up to about $550, which is a lot to sink into a T25 rebuild. In the end I decided to just spend a little extra for the T28 upgrade, which was $720 with return shipping. That includes machine work, replacing the entire center section, and replacing both wheels.

My only gripe was the wait time. It took them 2 weeks before they even inspected it, then another 3.5 weeks before I got it back. Counting the time it took them to receive it, that's 6 weeks door to door.

Here are the comparison pics:

Gpop shop is the ****! My boy got his Big T28 off of them for his GS-T. They were really fast about shipping and the turbo works great. Unfortunately he still couldnt pull on my T25 lol. His car is all wheel spin now.

I think you spent to much. If you bought the T25 for say $50 and dumped $720 you got $770

You can buy a GTIR turbo for $750. You advantage is many. You get a .86 AR Turbine housing vs the .63 for the T25. The GTIR has the bigger compressor housing vs the T25. All this means more HP with less heat.

I know there were a few companies doing your build for $550.

Just an opinion.

Yeah, I agree. I'm actually trying to "downgrade" this car though. It's got a perfectly fine T28 on it right now. I just wanted a simple T25 setup for it as a daily. When they saw the turbine wheel was damaged, my only options were to pay $65 for the inspection and do nothing, pay $550 for the T25 rebuild, or pay $720 for the T28 upgrade. Dollar for dollar, a new T28 is a much better turbo, but this one will work OK for me.

It will work great actually. I just felt it was a little costly. This was a setup we would do back in the day. There was even a build on the odl forum where a customer of mine did it about 5 years ago or so.

You will love it. The best part about this setup is most people will never know what hit them.

Try and see if you can get a GTIR .86 exhaust housing from someone with a broken turbo. It will bolt right up as the rear whell you have is the GTIR turbine wheel. You will get way better top end performance.

IIRC the Big T28 wheels is the same as the stock GTIR.

I do agree gpopshop is always fast when I have any question and they know there ****!!

I was trying to get them to put a T67 compressor wheel into my GTIR T28, but I didn't have the $$.

This should be a nice performing turbo but I agree with Dre, it was a lil costly.

I remember doing this upgrade and rebuild on my T25 back in the day at a local spot for $350.
