I have a question pertaining to oil pumps, since we're on the subject...

I pulled my timing cover off the motor last night (Finally!), and to my dismay, the top left portion of the cover as you're looking at the motor from the passenger side, was cracked. Not just cracked, but that entire portion where the bolt mates to the block, fell off. Looks like it was initially overtorqued, and this is where my oil leak has been coming from.

Do you all happen to know if the DET oil pump, will work properly in a DE timing cover? I know the timing covers are identical, but I don't know about the pump, itself. I'd prefer to use the DET oil pump over the DE oil pump I have, for safety reasons (big boost, so I don't want a drop in oil pressure).

Thanks in advance.

I am almost 100% sure that there is no difference in the oil pump between the DE and DET. Only the VE and GTiR are diff.

You can get a gtir kit from greg v for a really good price. comes with new pulley too.

The gtir pump is easier to find and cheaper than the ve, but will cavitate at a lower rpm than the VE pump. I have documented the differences in my build thread very well with pics and everything. At first I was worried about using the gtir pump on my ve-t but I have had extremely good luck with it so far. I have perfect oil pressure, even with all the extra oil-consuming pieces on there. oil squirters, cam squirters, chain squirter, cam switchover, and turbo with oil cooler.

I would use the ve one if i could find one again, but they are simply too hard to come by.

by the way, the pickup tube and spacer for the ve and gtir are the same as well, but the pulley for the gtir is gtir specific. I am pretty sure the gtir pulley will work with the ve pump too, but the ve pulley will not work with the gtir pump because of clearance issues.

hope this helps.

Thats not right there is no way the pick up tubes are the same.
The VE pick up won't work on the gtir the oil pans are not even close. The VE tube is longer it would be sticking out of the lower oil pan. They both might work on a de, but the ve won't work on the gti-r or det.

I have an un-used VE pick up sitting in the garage because of this

There is in fact a difference, though minute. I tried to swap pumps over last night with no luck. the gears themselves on the DET actually are taller, than the DE gears. Dimensionally, they fit fine into the galley of the timing cover, but you cannot put the pump cover back on, as the gears are in the way.

Looks like I'm either going to use a DE oilpump, or spend a bunch of money on a VE oilpump

That's the thing that sucks, though. I don't know if I should use a VE one, or stick with a DE oilpump. I mean, guys run DET motors on DE oil pumps without a problem so I don't know why I'm going nuts over here. Think I'll just slap on the DE pump and call it a day.

They're not that hard to find, TBH. They range from $220 to $240.

TeKKiE what motor do you have? I might have an old cover from a Bluebird you can have. I need to check on the things condition first though

Jer,

I'm not sure what the block is, whether it's a BB or Avenir. The timing cover and everything looks just like my DE, other than the fact that the pump gears on the DET are taller by a millimeter or two compared to the DE pump gears... I haven't really looked closely enough online to determine how to tell the difference from just the block, from the exterior.
