Twistex Motion GT2871R Turbo...Opinions??
Web Store

Anyone heard of? Opinions? Seems SUPER cheap for a 2871R.

There is a guy here in Hawaii selling a brand new one for $300, so I am considering picking it up to replace my GTI-R T28.

LMK what you guys think!

They make less power than a Garrett of the same frame and wheel size I know that was mentioned somewhere around here, but I dunno where.

Oh damn. Ok good to know. Still may consider this at the $300 price, as my goals are 300whp or so MAX. No tracks here so no need for crazy power. Just some fun weekend stuff.

Fitment for 3" inlet might be an issue as well with a GTI-R mani (have to grind on block) as well, correct?

I have used 4 different journal bearing 2871 china turbos before. They are slow to spool but do the job pretty good for what they cost. The most we got out of one was 330 whp @ 24-26psi (stock cams) The only reason I pulled the one off of my RR automatic car is that it took until 4k rpm to get full boost and the RR's have a 6750 redline... Too bad your not local I have a couple new ones laying around I would get rid of for $200 each

Good info right here. What kind of numbers would an authentic Garrett 2871R put out at the same boost levels? And, obviously, the compressor housing would need to be reclocked upward. Do you know if reclocking the turbo messes with the balance of the wheel? Or can I just loosen the 6 bolts and rotate the housing? I have never tried before and I'd like to not mess anything up if so.

As far as my setup, I'm planning to run it on my Avenir w/ S4HL cams, so higher redline shouldn't be a problem. Not really looking to boost past stock levels though. No tracks over here so just looking for some weekend/freeway fun.

And as far as selling yours, do you still have those tubular manifolds and J-pipe sitting around? Maybe one big package deal? LMK!

You can loosen the bolts and reclock either housing without hurting anything. Really on the T2 turbos from what I have seen is boost is boost. Your engine at 14.5psi (roughly 1 atmosphere) of boost will double the engine horsepower. Get a ball bearing chra, port the housing, or lighter compressor wheel you will have that boost faster. The china wheels and housings may be a little rough or less efficient and the wheels are probably heavier but you are still going to get very close to the same horsepower as a Garrett probably just a lot slower. Another funny thing about the china stuff is that most of them are direct copy's of Garretts products (including the part numbers) but castings are usually rougher. I'm still a bit worried about the knockoff ball bearing stuff, been burned on a few of them already.

I'll check at work to see of there are any manifolds squirreled away and send you a PM.

OK, all good info to know! I assume spending for the BB CHRA , housing port, and lighter comp wheel will put me at an authentic Garret unit price anyway, huh? In that case, may as well save time and get the real deal unit.

Wow, even cheaper. At that price though, I kinda worry about quality. How can you have that unit THAT much cheaper than an authentic unit and it not be made of plastic or something. I mean, it's almost worth trying...but I just worry about the time it would take to switch back if this unit gives after 10k miles or so.

If you aren't going over 14psi the 2871 will be a downgrade from the gtir turbo. The 60mm gtir wheel is perfect size for a 220-300 hp car.
