Keeps on POPING
i dont know what i am doing wrong i warm up the car take out the tps rev the car 3 times to 3k and then set the timing. i set it to 19* right b4 the last line... and when i drive it and switch anything after 3k you can say the car makes a little back fire out of the intake..... i dont understand it at all.... gas sucks which i think is because of the timing..... am i setting it right? when do you know your in timing mode? will it not change even if i change the timing by the dist. but its not in "timing mode"

I thought for turbo cars you want the timing at 15* at idle? or am I wrong?

I know you're supposed to shut the car off before plugging the TPS back in. Also what do you mean by switch anything after 3k??

You can still adjust it physically without the timing mode but the ECU will be confused and it will apparently not run as well as it could I've heard. Don't know exactly.

Backfire out the intake side would imply you have advanced it too far. If like he said it is turbo I'm pretty sure you don't want to have it up at 19 because of the added pressure (which would also explain why the backfires only happen at higher RPMs).

^How long do you leave the car off? Does it matter? I need to double check my timing. You unplug it while the car is running though correct? Do the rain dance then shut it off?

I also thought that turbo cars stay a 15* timing with a .028 plug gap.........I thought these things were set in stone somewhere

I have heard both shutting off the car, and leaving it running.

I rev the car to 3500rpm 3 consecutive times, letting it drop to idle speed in between, then just unplug the TPS. The idle dips a little bit, then jumps up so I know I'm in timing mode. Then I can make adjustments to IACV and ignition, and when I'm done I just plug the TPS back in.

The easier way to do it of course, is to just go into base idle timing mode using conzult, but the way I mentioned above works for me every time, as well.

so what should my timing be at?

15 degrees is recommended for turbo.

^So you do this part in bold before you unplug the TPS?

Don't make me find it in the FSM! I'll do it!!

When i did mine straight out of the FSM it said warm the car up to normal operation temps, then rev to 2k rpm for 2 minutes. then turn the car off and unplug the TPS. Restart the car and rev to 3k 3 times and it should be in timing mode. Now change your timing to what you want. Turn the car off the plug back in the TPS and start again and drive. This worked for me when unplugging the TPS while driving didnt so much.
