Help!!! SR20VE-T
Planning to swap a vvl head onto a U13 det block.

Im not able to get my hands on a vvl oil pump right now, will the vvl activate? Seeing that the det oil pump is a lower pressure pump than the vvl oil pump?

Thanks

As far as I know the pump will work BUT this is not a common thing done (putting a VE head onto a U13 DE-T block) and I doubt many have done it so your probably going to have to just find out, that is if you can't get a VE pump. Make sure when its all put together and you first start it up that you closely monitor the pressure with an aftermarket gauge, and if you drive it make sure the pressure is correct before you give any significant throttle? Perhaps use a thinner viscosity oil too at first just to make sure it's easier and lighter to get pumped around

u would also have to drill an tap the vvl head for an external oil feed for the vvl as well as plug the factory hole on the bottom of the head (the head gasket suface side) so it doesn't leak.

vvl will prob activate but i'd just get a ve pump to be safe.. @pTen can get these new or @GregV but i think pten has some used ones still maybe..

^^ what lynch said. VVL will activate but the question is will the correct psi of oil pressure be there as well. and coolant flow

All you need I have.

Get the pump. I've had a ve pump fail on me and under 40psi I could not activate the exhaust cam. Just do yourself the favor and get the pump and install it before you put the head on.

FYI the coolent passages on the det and ve are a bit different. The head will bolt on and work with the oil bypass done but the det with ve head motors tend to run a little hot so watch it close. I have seen two of them over heat easy and kill the motor. Your better off putting the det rods and pistons into a ve. Good luck.

I will second this. My old ve is on a det bottom end and that thing would warm up really fast. Scared me for a while, but it works just fine now. @minimonster

Why not shim and port out the DET pump if you can't get your hands on a VE pump?
