So yes, 'dumb luck' as you put it!! And Im enjoying every second of it (while it lasts)
Anyhow, how do I make this pocket rocket into a rally car for the Targa Newfoundland?

gut it and cage it.
sell the bumpers and rear spoiler for funds.
go spank some cars with your beater that will shock everyone.

the distributor issue stands out to me... I hav a feeling the person mis-matched brands of cap and rotors.. ive seen a few different brands be molded differently. ive found that Standard is the best brand closest to stock and ive found my car will barly run with bosch stuff.

I picked up a cap yesterday - after waiting for a week for the order + they forgot to get the rotor arm!!
Guess I'll get that in today as its a summery +7 degrees here in Toronto.
Think I'm going to keep the car looking as it does - its looks great.
I think all it really needs is an upgrade to breaks, rollcage and seats. Oh yeah some guages that tell you whats going on under 'there' too!!
Although I have worked on some high end cars (power wise), I havent a clue about this motor.
So your ideas and input are very welcome.

Holly motor mount batman. Good find man, as for parts a lot of the tune up parts for a 91-93 sentra ser will work. The turbo lag could be a few things, check for shaft play on the turbo and if it is ok you have a boost leak under pressure. Who ever had the car before you did some work and spent some $ Ono that car. That should makea fun rally car.

Cap (from a nissan nx - direct fit) didn't make a difference.... I can hear the car wanting to take off, but its hesitating, buh buh buh and backfiring.
Although she isn't 'Going', you can feel there is a lot of power under the hood, just waiting to take off!!
Fuel filter maybe? timing off? I have a timing gun, but how would I check the timing on this motor?

Yea basically u need to do a entire tune up... the car has obviously been mistreated. just by seeing all the oil and crap in the engine.bay tells u theres a heck of a leak somewhere or he drove around with the oil cap off for a few times ha ha. also wtf is the coolant resevoir doin back in the corner.

lots of.little stuff to give some time and attention but still a steal for.the price u paid.

personally id start with a compression.and leakdown test so you know where you stand as far as engine health... the distributor cap.and rotor comment from me.before shoulda been around 5th to check on the.list after engine health.... fluid levels.and.condition...plugs..and fuel system

Yeah do a full check and then tune up
Check compression, timing and boost leaks
Check spark plugs for lean or rich condition
Then replace
Cap, rotor, plug, wires
Fuel filter, make sure the car has a good fuel pump not the stock one as it will not support the power.

Nice to see another canadian on the forum! If your thinking of just unloading the car, I will buy the bumpers from you! (Front and Back) Let us know what your plans are with the car. Thanks Dave

Take a look at the ecu, maybe it's got the stock one, and that ain't gonna cut it now that the car is boosted. If there's no sticker on the outside indicating that it's modified, open it up and see if there's a daughterboard in there, or just take a picture of both sides of the innards.
