I went and looked at a b15 SE today at the junkyard..unfortunately it was a non-lsd 5 speed :/ The p10 g20 I looked at was an auto.

Damn what a let down. I hate running up to a car i see for the first time at the yard, and it falls just short.

When i found mine, i looked at the motor, badges, peeked under and saw "the hump",

Mine blew on the way to my brother's garage to start the swap for a B15 gearbox (blew 3rd gear into 1 million and 1 pieces merging lol). Still had 5th and drove it to his place some 50+ miles away lol .

50 miles, wow. That's good news because I gotta get my car from my place to another house about 5 miles from me. I noticed 4th and 2nd getting harder to get in gear as I drove along from work to my place on Friday and that was only a few miles. I'm not sure how long I can wait on a b15/p11 to show up. I might just put a weak one in there and in the mean time keep an eye out for a b15/p11. My original one lasted 3 years w/a turbo, but I've been making quite a bit more power lately and I think that's why this one finally gave up. I did do a b15 swap at one time, but not on my car, so I'm pretty familiar w/the swap.

Ya I was ready for the hump, but all I got was a flat chested tranny. Aint nobody got time for that. The lollerocker looked in good condition though.

Do axles usually survive a 3rd gear explosion? J/W because of all the loose fragments in the transmission, I thought maybe they would get pitted or messed up somehow.

I'm sure they're fine.

That non-LSD tranny is still a good find. The gear stacks fit right into the LSD tranny.
You can never have to much spare parts.

I was actually entertaining the idea of pulling it and putting a phantom grip in there, but almost everything I read about the phantom grip is bad. Also, good idea on keeping it just for a backup for the stack (assuming I go to a P11/B15 LSD housing). I could also probably put a Nismo LSD in there for the price of a proper LSD tranny. Anyone have input on this idea?

UPDATES!

Well, I have some updates. About 2 weeks ago, as coincidental as it can get, a local b15 SE (LSD) got totaled. With help from a friend, we pulled the tranny from the wrecked b15 and swapped it into my b14. We also changed out the turbine housing from a .64 to a .86(this was all I was wanting to do, but then the tranny exploded). The car feels great! It's faster and the transmission feels a lot newer. One thing I didn't expect is the notchiness. I'm guessing it's because the transmission is just newer, but I feel more notchiness than I did in the old b14 tranny. I have no qualms about going w/the b15. I really don't feel much difference in the gearing except in 1st and 2nd and those are not too close. I think the shorter gearing may actually help a bit due to the larger turbine and the fact most of my power is created on the right side of the RPM gauge anyways. I also have no qualms about the .86 turbine housing. I really don't notice the extra lag at all. I think it spools maybe 200-300rpm later, but I really don't notice it at all. It all goes by so quick.

So, that ends my broken 3rd gear saga. Hopefully it won't happen again! Otherwise, I'll have to take this one apart and stick a QG18 stack in there -- a whole new world of fun!

Car's back on the road, spinning it's way to glory

Hey gomba just curious, but did you have any pre-warning before your 3rd gear went? Any strange noises while in 3rd before it happened?

I was thinking about this. I did notice a little bit of grinding when going into gears for the last couple months. Never happened very much, only a couple times over a few months, but I don't remember it ever happening previous to that. That's the only thing I can think of.
