My discoloration was from the exhaust gases from a leaky manifold. The manifold had cracks all the way around the ports which caused the black soot (sp?) on the nuts. I thought the same thing, @lynchfourtwenty. After some inspection, noticed cracks all the way around. I had replaced ALL of my stock manifold nuts with copper nuts. This was only after maybe 300 miles of use. The rest of the copper nuts had slight discoloration, which is probably what you are referring to. But the 2 closest to the first cracks were completely black. So, you could definitely see the difference there. The copper nuts have held up great! It was a cheap manifold. Very cheap. But, you live and learn. I will stay away from those ebay parts.
