weird boost leak results?
we did a boost leak test on lumpy and we had the oil pan off (was checking the oil pickup an it wasnt very tight) anyways we kept hearing air escaping from the engine, so we capped off the coupler that goes to the throttle body and iacv, but same thing.. so then we took the oil drain hose off the turbo an noticed it was coming from there, so we plugged that, ran the test again and it blew oil out of where the oil filter goes (changed oil filter an hadn't put it back on yet)

what does this mean? is the turbo oil seals going bad or is this normal?? we checked the intercooler piping an couplers for any signs of oil an there were none, the car also doesnt smoke while boosting..

turbo is a Garrett GT2871R and seems to be in good shape from what i can tell.

how is your pcv routed?

We plugged the cold side pipe before the iacv but after the bov.. then attatched the tester we made straight to the turbo inlet so there was no boost going into the manifold, block or valve cover..

To answer your question, stock.

the brass fitting, is that capped off?

to me, it sound like your getting air into the engine. not turbo related.

edit: take the oil feed off the turbo, if your getting air trough that air is definitely getting into your engine.

edit #2: just saw your reply. hmmm how much pressure are you running for the test?

We took that whole pipe an coulpler combo out the the equation.. just put the home made boost leak tester in a 2.5 coupler an put it staight I. The turbo..

That fitting has a hose that goes to the valve cover.

The air was going out the oil drain til we plugged it, then it pushed oil out of where the oil filter goes on cause we had it off.

Is this normal? If not whats the deal?

Regulator was set to 15psi but it wasnt getting past 3, once we bypassed the turbo the rest of the piping held upto 24psi but then bov seal started to leak lol.. we didnt test the engine by itself yet it got late

Sounds to me like the turbo seals letting air into the oil, since testing after the turbo showed no leaks. However, I'm not 100% sure they are supposed to be able to hold that kind of pressure anyway? Someone else would know better.

Like Keo said, maybe remove the turbo oil feed and see if it leaks from there.

Im positive it would, this is a de engine so the oil feeds hooked right to the oil filter housing where the sensor used to be.
