Bought a GTIR, odd turbo on it.

I bought a GTIR Pulsar for $1k, has some body and rust issues which im fixing up. Pulled engine to sort some stuff in engine bay, so giving it a good service. Thought i should check play in the turbo, and it looks like this!

This is the turbo that was on the engine in the car. There is a 3mm gap all around the outside of the compressor wheel. It has all the markings of a GTIR T28 on the compressor housing, havent removed it to check the tag on the center housing yet.

For comparison, this is another GTIR turbo on my spare engine.

Now im thinking maybe its had some work done, and the compressor wheel has been replaced with a t25 wheel, or it has a t25 center section. I havent boosted it hard, but in the couple of short drives i had it felt quite responsive and quick.

Its fortunate i have a spare, but a shame i need to steal the turbo off what is a complete engine.

looks like the compressor wheel was clipped or swapped with another wheel.

And, its a T25 turbo with a GTIR compressor housing. Its .64 ex housing. I can see the center housing tag, but no point as its clearly a t25.

Not sure who thought that was a good idea lol.

Swapping turbo off spare engine, forward we go!

Did you try spooling it and see how much it boosts?

Reason I ask is I got ripped off by someone and that same shit happened to me, T25 turbo with T28 housing, my turbo not only was as laggy as a T3/T4 ebay turbo but it also did not boost past 5psi even with the actuator vacuum unpluged. Needless to say, was the slowest turbo sentra

No, i got the car out of storage, hadnt been started for 9 months and no idea on how it was serviced before that. Checked oil and coolant and took it for a short drive, checked everything was still ok then drove it 20 min home. It did feel quite peppy to drive tho, but i never got over half throttle.

Its got a t28 on it now, hopefully put engine back in soon and put rest of it back together and get it on the road soon.
