I thought about that as well but I figured I put it out there as some food for thought. I have witnessed a few motors that were assembled without decking the top of the pump with the block which led to headgasket failure upon startup.

How did the oil look when drained?

Very valid point, I just assumed that this would have occurred when the block was decked. So it may not be the tensioning of the studs, it could be the oil pump holding the head proud.

It has caused a lot of people to falsely blame headgaskets and headstuds for mixing coolant, lol. We now make sure an oil pump always goes to the machine shop when getting any machine work done.

Re: No compression....
I'm not going to be able to do a leak down until the weekend. I'll post results then as well as another compression test. I really appreciate all the ideas and suggestions! Thank you! I have a haunting feeling the engine is going to be coming out and going back to a machine shop though...

Whatever happened with this?

Well I let it sit all summer since it's 110 degrees in phoenix and my patience was at its end... In the last month I have removed and disassembled the engine. Had the block and head remachined. The we're out .003 and .005 respectively. They were cut at a different machine shop than before, Thank god. Currently in the process of putting it all back together. Hopefully have it in the car in the next week or two. Anyone have any thoughts on the head and block only being off that much and it not sealing? The new machine shop said there were waves in the head before he cut it. Like the head was bucking on the mill at the place I took it last time...

It also appeared that the front cover was not on the block the initial time it was machined. However, one side was a little low and the other was within .003

The head is on with a brand new cosworth gasket and the same mazworx studs. Hopefully I'll get the rest of the engine put together over the weekend and in the car the following weekend. I'm accepting prayers from all religions that it seals this time!

I did notice this time around the studs went in way smoother. I think I remember some of them hissing and giving a little resistance last time. Maybe there was a small amount of oil in the channels they thread into last time around... If so I have to believe that was the issue the whole time... any thoughts?
