Question: On center exhaust housings **update pics**
I've searched this forum some and and others as well, does anyone know which brand turbos have more on center exhaust housings? I'm putting together a build after about a 10 year break from turbo sr's and was going to run a 4 bolt garrett housing. Well it didn't come close to cleaeing the head or valve cover, even after EXTENSIVE grinding. I found enough info about exhaust housings being closer to on center to decide to try a 5 bolt housing and everything clears just fine now. I should point out the manifold was built for a ve and I'm running a de. I'm not sure if there a subtle differences in the position on the exhaust ports on the different heads that caused some of my fitment problems. I'm sure its a possibility. But back to my question. Am I stuck with using a turbo with a 5 bolt garrett housing or are the other turbos that are more on center like the the 5 bolts? The only person who I know of that had the manifold running in a car was on a ve and a precision turbo. I obviously don't want to buy a bunch of turbos and cross my fingers lol. Thanks for any input you can share!

Where it hits the vc with the 4 bolt

Not fully seated on manifold

Lots of grinding...

Fits with 5 bolt

Re: On center exhaust housings
The 5 bolt housing is off getting coated so i can't take any pics of that for another week or so. I'll take a few with the 4 bolt housing tomorrow evening and post them up. I cut off the entire post the catch can bolts to and even ground part of the valve cover where it sits on the corner post in the head and it still wouldn't clear the compressor housing. Its a .63ar with a 57 trim compressor housing t3t4 turbo.

Updated with pics. The last pic is the only one I have with the 5 bolt housing. I can take more when i get it back in a week from getting coated.

Use a manifold flange as a shim and two gaskets to move the turbo away from the valve cover a bit?
Your hardware looks long enough.

I tried. Pushed to compressor housing into the hood. The 4 bolt Garrett housings seem to push the turbo up and pull it closer to the motor on a top mount manifold. I bought a 5 bolt housing and everything fits fine. I'm curious how the precision turbos compare to the Garrett 4 bolts as far as how the flange is positioned on the exhaust housing... any idea?

the 5 bolt sits further back over the 4 bolt and vband. had the similar issue with the sidewinder.

it's all in the turbine housing. dont matter what turbo it is.
