a competent machine shop can cut reliefs in your pistons, if your in the tristate i can send you to a guy who will do it, just bring a stock ve piston with you

Not always the best route sometimes the thickness of the top of the piston is not thick enough for a relief so when it's cut it becomes very thin and with high cylinder pressure you might see cracking or failure. I have noticed when measuring the Ve specific pistons are usually thicker to compensate.

The reliefs dont have to be very big. Like I said, my buddy got away with his n1's set at +5-5 on his DE/VE hybrid setup and that motor saw 10k plus on a mis shift with no rev limiter several times. When we pulled the motor apart after it spun a bearing the pistons had just a very light nick from the valves touching at one point. And you could tell it was old because carbon had already started to fill in the nick. I mean it just barely touched the piston. If you cut reliefs id say no deeper than about .005"-.010" would suffice. I believe if he had the cams straight up there wouldnt have been any contact more than likely. Most people to be safe say just dont use n1's on DE/DET pistons because of the likelyhood of contact. Especially if the head or block has been decked.

the machine shop checked before he did anything, like ashton says it doesnt have to be deep at all i have an oem det piston that got hit and its a very mild indent, my DE JE pistons came with really deep reliefs

Interesting... So with the small backhousing im looking at the 20v or vet cams. Will both clear without reliefs? I would have to run both straight up and will they be ok on stock s/r i assume? I dont see any sense in revving past 7500-8k for what i want...

They will clear fine, run them straight up as well.
