Thread: Engine cutting out??

Hey guys I just picked up a 92 240sx with a SR20DET Redtop in it. Its got an apexi turbo, greddy blow off valve, and some headers. Now when I give it gas or take it about 5000 RPM, it will briefly cut out and come back on a few times, and then rise in RPMs no problem. Anyone know why She cuts out? Is it the timing? New to SR20's So I dont know. PLEASE HELP!!!

What about the management? Are you sure it's tuned well?

I am not sure..Any suggestions on what I should do to try and fix it? This car RIPS and its fun as hell, but the cutting out has to go...I dont know where to start. Any ideas?

Revision:

Only has problems when throttle is pressed MORE than half way. If its half throttle, it works fine. Go past it, starts choking

Check plugs, plug gap, wires, cap, rotor etc.

ok, so that could give me my same problem about how it only sputters when I really wanna push it or race it? It's like when it hits 5000, it just cuts out, but then if you keep on the gas, itll get through the hard sputtering and continue to go up in RPM's.

You need to check the basics first.

Plugs
Wires
Cap
Rotor
Mechanical timing
Ign. timing.

Sounds to me like you're blowing out your spark.

By the way, this needs to be moved to the turbo section...

If this is really a redtop, it doesn't have a cap and rotor, and it doesn't have plug wires in the usual sense. Redtop has the cam angle sensor and coil-on-plug ignition; there's no distributor.

I'm confused by the OP's mention of an Apexi turbo and "some headers." Does that mean there's an aftermarket manifold?

It would also help us to know what injectors/MAF/engine management or tune is being used. We don't really have enough info.

Check coil packs, check plugs. STILL sounds to me like spark is being blown out. What's the plug gap set to? What plugs are they? Are they white, or soaked?

Are you running a stock turbo?

Thank You guys for all your help, much appreciated. To answer TeKKiE's question, I am NOT running a stock turbo. The "headers" are an aftermarket exhaust manifold, one of the ones where two of the header tubes kind of coil upwards and back down, like a circle. Has a 3" Down pipe and turbo back exhaust, with no Cat. I will check the plugs and wires.
