You hit it right on the head...boost gauge off the intake manifold & wastegate right off the compressor - that's the best way.

It matters because the wastegate reacts slower with the weaker signal downstream. In the grand scheme of things, with larger turbo setups, it is negligible. It makes a larger difference on smaller setups.
