Welding external WG onto stock manifold?
Hey,

I've been doing some reading on doing this and was wondering what is required? I've read that you should drill holes into the other runners..is that needed? How about location of the WG on the manifold? Anything else needed?

I should be able to find a welder around the KC area who is able to weld steel into iron, but wanted to know if I need them to do anything else to the manifold when they have it.

Thanks!

Just make sure the wastegate port draws from all cylinders (equally if you can). The stock manifold has a divider making it 99% split pulse (with just the tiniest bit of mixing at the end). This means you will have to be smart about where to place the wastegate port. If you want to get fancy, try to optimize flow more than that by making the angle of flow obtuse, and treat it with care like any other aspect of the induction or exhaust system. A lot of time physical restraints dictate where things are placed, but try your best.

Hmmm, what would be the easiest way to make sure the WG sees exhaust from all cylinders? Where would the best place be to place the WG? Any links/info on someone who already researched this for our manifolds?

Would it be better/easier to just get a custom manifold? Are there any that keep the stock mounting locations that come w/external WG?

Thanks!!

The easiest way is to cut a hole in the "top" of the manifold down as close to the collector as feasiably possible, directly in the "center" of the collector. Also make sure you do a good job of porting/smoothing/flowmatching (or removing) the dividing wall you will encounter. Do this at a 90 degree angle to the manifold or whatever fits well in the engine bay.

This is how 100% of the modifications I've seen have been done.

The best place on a stock manifold is not necessarily possible with the physical limitations of the engine bay. Ideally you would have a much shallower angle than 90 degrees for the wastegate port. Or, maybe even putting the port on the "rear" of the manifold still down by the collector but these placements may be impossible or impractical for other reasons.

That really depends on your goals and your budget.

I do believe Protech made such a manifold? Vadim or others would be able to confirm... It is certainly possible.

I assume you're also considering your divorced internal wastegate options as well?

I'm the 0.01%.

I'll have to wear short shorts to the convention.

I did, until I found out TurboFX needs the actual exhaust housing to make it, that along w/ a lead time of 6 weeks or more has me a little impatient going that direction. 6 weeks in the summer w/out a turbo car -- not sure if I can do it! Plus convention is coming up...
