vvl turbo...whats ur rpm switch point?
So I FINALLY hooked up my solenoids to pop vvl. But.the issue I'm having is what rpm to switch my cams at. For some reason it feels like a slight loss or dip in power when my cams switch.....switching to early?! Running a t3 log mani ( yea I know but please stay on topic lol) with a .70 compressor side and a .63 back end. I've tried all the early switch points ranging from 3500rpm to 4500 rpm and I feel that dip/ loss as soon as they kick at every point in between. I tried to keep it early to help spin the turbo ss I've read but this is my first vvl deal so lemme know what u all think......please don't flame lol

hmm sounds like the same problem Vadim and Coheed had with using a log manifold, lol.

Its because you probably are losing power. You can try a higher rpm than 4500 but I will say this, those that have used a tubular manifold have kicked the cams on as early as 3200 and seen power gains from it. But again it has to be an efficient setup.

People will tell you though that its all because of the tune and while a good tune will help it wont cure the whole issue.

Yea...thanks to klassikricans post I read A LOT about this issue. It's "seems" the log mani may be the issue(not tryna strike up that battle...just sayin). But what I wanna try which I also read in the thread to unplug the exhaust cam in to see how it run as Jwt has seen good gains doing this on bigger turbo setups. Worth a try cause I doubt ill loose anymore power then I am now lol. Another theory I wanna test is "possibly" leaving the exhaust cam constantly on. This is just a thought cause I read the vet cams use no activation at all but due to its cam profile the lobe seems so big to where its like its constantly on. Again.....these are all just thoughts

between 4000-5000rpm is a good starting point because every setup is different. I am switching at 5000rpm with my setup. try moving the switch point higher. I would have went with at least a .82 turbine housing.

Highest I've gone is 4.5 but ill try 5k. I just wonder which plug is for the intake and which is for the exhaust....

iirc the intake solenoid is closest to the valve cover.

SO....I put the "intake cam only" theory to the test...and I noticed quite the difference!

-no more dip/loss in power what so ever
-car seems more responsive and powerful after cam switch
-powerband seems be a tad bit more smoother/sounds healthier under load aswell
-per afc neo the air flow has increased by 7% versus having the exhaust cam plugged up

Again....just my notices as I am new to the vvl head game. I'm just tryna give us log mani user other options. Next I'm ganna try running with the exhaust cam constantly on but I may till I get to a Dyno for that.
