Turbo Talk: GT3071R or similar?
Folks, I've been out of the "game" for 5.5 yrs, and just recently started wrenching again. It is safe to say that I'm outdated as far as what turbos are currently dominating the market. From just lurking through the forum, Precision's 6262 seems to be the route most people are going with...

Those of you that know me will recall that I went from a T25/T28 setup to Precision's SC61 right before going into "retirement." Although I loved the "big" power I made with the SC61, I missed the quick/torquey response of a small frame turbo. With that said, this time around I want to go with a turbo that is in-between these two opposites.

The tentative blueprinted setup (major items):
-SR20VE
-SR20VE Cams
-N1 Manifold & TB
-Aftermarket Rods/Pistons (9.5:1 comp)
-Protech EQL
-GT3071R (???)

The GT3071R (T3) has always intrigued me. I've always heard good things about these turbos, and I'm seriously considering using this turbo for my planned setup. However, simplicity is important to me. I'm not interested in running extra lines (water lines) to make this work - I'd rather run normal oil lines and call it a day. Not to mention, the term "affordable" isn't synonymous with the GT3071R

Anyways, to cut it short, what other turbos are worth looking into that offer the power/efficiency of the GT3071R? Suggestions?

Thanks

sc6262 not too laggy

journal bearing means no water lines

with that comp ratio it should be a monster and can find them relatively cheap

getting the spool of a bb turbo in a non bb set up is going to be tough. The precision turbos do a great job with the billet compressor wheels. Its also very cheap compared to buying a gt3071r or gtx3071r. I have the gt3071r and the response is great. I picked it up used for about what you will pay for a 6262 new.

"Not too laggy" is relative.

Let me clarify... I'm not expecting a journal bearing turbo to equally compete against a bb turbo. And even at that, bb turbos offer 200-300 RPM advantage over journal bearing turbos - its not a deal breaker.

I'm still running a bb 3071r on the old U13det setup.I think it's a pretty good turbo.

You could also check out the Precision 5857 turbo, it will have decent spool characteristics on a 2.0L and still be able to make 500ish without a problem.

I just did a quick search on the 5857 and I am really liking what I am seeing. I need to locate the compressor map and plot some #s and compare it to the 3071R.

Thanks for the suggestion!

If I had unlimited funds, I'd be looking into a Garrett GTX2871R or similar (when they start making them?) but if money isn't that bountiful I'd look into the GT3071R like you've been thinking. Although, there are other choices out there.

type of bearing has nothing to do with water cooled or oil cooled

u can get ball bearing in oil cooled or water cooled it depends on the brand

precision 6262 comes in journal bearing and ball bearing and both are oil cooled only

most precisions are oil cooled only the only precisions that run oil and water are the smaller T2 bolt on series
