If they are Garrett replicas and that cheap, why not buy one for the housings and use garrett components?

May be the case. I really don't know.

If you buy one just take it to a turbo shop and have them change the seals and balance it. That's what a local turbo shop does with the EBAY turbo's. Buys them cheap fixes them and sells them again.

This does seem to make sense

Some castings are so out of balance we have had to throw the wheels away. From China they have been ground to the point where they are paper thin along the back-side of the compressor. Scary to see something like that spinning at 100k rpm.

I would just take the housings off and inspect when you get them. They usually balance out decently, but the amount they have to take away from the wheels to balance is just incredible. Even so, I have only seen a couple turbos fail because of it. My buddy skip rebuilds turbos for a living, and working with him I have learned a lot about the difference in quality.

With every turbo that has blown up, I have seen 20-30 that work awesome with no issues at all. Failure rate is similar to any brand, multiplied by 5

Seriously though, there are so many people using these things with good results it is hard to argue. I'm all for quality, but when results come down, 300whp is 300whp. Why spend $1100 for a disco potato for a cheap build. Engine is likely to blow up from tuning issues, too much boost, or general wear, just as much as the turbo.

I would say for a budget build, they are very good. Just don't expect every one to be good, and don't expect them to last as long as a name brand.

As long as the buyer is aware of what can happen, it is a budget option... I would rather run a used Holset or t25-t28 oem nissan, but that is just me.... I have seen some ebay turbos work, online on Honda's but it wouldn't be my choice. For $300 you could have a nice used Holset and make really good power. With the used t25/t28 Nissan turbos you could get up to 300whp on the t28, for power above that on a budget, you have the Holset option. If you are looking for over 300whp, it is going to cost a good amount with the supporting mods to make it work, why skimp on the most important part? JMHO

If the op has a disco potato that is good for about 350whp conservatively and a low 12 high eleven in the quarter depending on traction in the g20.
