Thread: VE+T vs DET

So after my built VE spun a bearing I'm leaning towards a stock motor with some boost to get me going again.

DET motors are currently a bit scarce and the ones that are available look a bit questionable (brown/goldish look inside the tappet cover).

There are however many clean VE's around for the same money.

How would a VE+T stack up against a factory DET? Thinking along the lines of factory sized turbos here (powerwise) and more importantly - reliability wise? I know in time I will want to get a better turbo on there etc, so how much hp can the VE+T support or should I just go with a DET from the start?

I know I can just put some better rods and pistons in the VE for boost but I'm a little tired of buil/opened motors right now that don't seem to last - or maybe it's just me.

VE prices seem to be going up a little again after a nice drop. If it were me and I had the money Id get a VE tap the block and run about 1 bar of boost through it all stock.

Any of these motors can spin a bearing. Its just less likely with a motor that hasnt seen boost and hasnt been abused and its newer.

The answer to this really depends on your wallet though. Cause both will make stupid power. The DE will be cheaper to do it on though.

I would go ve-t. the ve rods are the same size as the de rods. a properly tuned ve can make 400whp on the stock internals. Jp made over 500whp on his stock ve. He did eventually kill the motor but after tons of abuse. Just make sure to get a good flowing manifold to start with.

Well I'ma noob on this site, but I've talked to a veteran to the sr game, and what he told me to do is de-t bottom end and put the ve head on top, I guess you might have to get hybrid gasket.
but I mean it's already ready for boost, hook up the VVL and I think you might a VE-t on your hands,

VE+T any day. The low cams are torque and don't feel doggy outside of boost. DET compression is just to low for my taste.



That is the key, plan and built for a good tubular manifold right of way. Will save you time and money later on.



DE oil pump wont be strong enough for VE, DET is marginally enough. DET comes at a price of being a skinny block and you have to send extra oil to the head (cams).

VE is practially the same as USDM RR, thus finding parts for non VVL specific items is easy. Also VE comes with oil squirters by default, like the DET. The only bad thing about VE is the pistons, drop a set of DET's in there and you will never have to worry about them.

dont be scared to boost a stock ve people its amazing what they can do when done and tuned properly

i just went de+t should i have to worry about the oilpump on the de?
