Thread: flywheel bolt torque...please read

in searching i have found 61-69 ft lbs for an sr20de. ive also found upwards close to 100ft lbs for an sr20DET......what about a turboed sr20, or sr20de+t? are we torquing the bolts per bolt spec or HP spec? i know my buddys det is a 19mm 12 point bolt and my de has a 14mm 12 point bolt.

I always use the fsm spec of 61-69lbft on fwd motors. I also use loctite on the flywheel bolts. I have never had a issue with them backing out. I will be putting my flywheel on my ve-t today.

61-69 is correct, the DET (GRIR) uses 11mm bolts so that could be why its higher...I always use red loctite as well.

Torque them to the 61-69 ft-lbs.

Or do what I did and remember it wrong, and torque them to 90 ft-lbs and worry about them for months.

Ben, explain? I went mid point and torqued to 80ft lbs.

The tranny is still on the floor and clutch not yet bolted on.

take the bolts back out and torque them to the correct spec using loctite. over torquing can cause the bolts to stretch and fail. I have seen flywheel bolts break and the flywheel come off due to this.

Uhh... Don't do that... I said to torque to 61-69.

I was just saying how I'm an idiot and remembered the torque spec wrong, so I torqued to 90-something. Way too high. And for a long time, I've been worried about them. So far, so good, but I wish I hadn't done that.

Also, the bolts are torque-to-yield bolts, so technically you should buy new ones every time. Once you torque them once they are not to be re-used.

However, you can get around that limitation by torquing a bit higher than spec. Maybe 75 ft-lbs if you're really in a pinch. A lot of us have done similar and not had any problems. Not the best way to do it though.

Hmm....including from factory, this will be the 3rd time that I know of these bolts have been torqued. I originally got the motor used.

Measure the stretch on them. I have reused bolts a few times but I inspect them first. As long a the threads are in good condition and the stretch is with in spec I will reuse them.
