2871R Owners: Compressor O-Ring? Does it have it?
Hey,

I have a question for anyone who has owned a 2871R turbo. Did it come w/an O-ring between the compressor housing and backplate adapter? Mine didn't and I'm wondering if it should have one. I have the T25 housing.

Thanks!

My disco does not have one, I have read about this and people have used RTV just to make sure it dosnt leak.

It is probably a machine fit. Check the edges on the back plate and cold housing. If the back plate has recess towards the edge I'm pretty sure it should have one.

Mine does not, and is machined perfectly to not leak

Ahh, ok that's good to know.

I do have a leak somewhere on the compressor housing and we put RTV around the housing but there's a new leak so the turbo will have to come back off and be bench boost leak tested. I was just wondering if I needed to get an O-ring for the housing, but it appears it doesn't need one, just more RTV.

I've read that some of the housing bolts can leak as they actually are drilled all the way through to the inside of the housing.

My gt28rs and gt28r did not have a o-ring. My gt3071r does have one. The bolts should have had loctite from the factory. You may need to put more on it you have taken it apart a few times.

Is the loctite used to help the bolts from backing out or for sealing them up so they don't cause a boost leak? (or both?)

its to keep them from backing out. You could also use a light coat of rtv if you worried about air getting around the bolt. Copper gasket spray would work good for this application. I have not had this issue before but anything is possible.

Little off topic sorry but do the gti-r turbos use a o-ring?

When I first took the compressor housing off my GTi-R T28 turbo it looked like there was a highly degraded black paper gasket in place between the housing and the back plate. After asking about it, I was told there was no gasket or o-ring. It turns out it was just soot or other black residue. I don't recall if I even cleaned it up or not. Put it back together and have had no issues.
