Thread: gtir part throttle problem

Hello I recently changed the turbo on my gtir to a bigger t3t4 and when I'm at part throttle say I'm driving at 65mph in 5th gear just holding the throttle steady it starts to kick kinda sounds like compressor surge but if I give it gas it goes away and runs smooth the problem is only when holding throttle pedal steady to keep speed at 65 or say 70 so its freaking annoying the only way to keep it from happening is constantly having to accelerate which means picking up speed any I deas didn't have this prob with the t28 the boost is at 16 psi right now another thing is I think it has a vaccumm leak because my gauge is only reading 10ph it use to read 17 I been trying to find the leak no luck

Don't think that's the problem it sounds like turbo surge at part throttle

re-check timing..it appears you do have a vacuum leak, I'd probably find that first. Boost leak test?

Well I wouldn't know how to do a boost check leak I pretty much sprayed around the engine bay with brake cleaner no luck

hmm you can search on how to build a boost leak tester and also brake cleaner wont do crap to find leaks. maybe soapy water when it bubbles up from the air.

Ya as long as you have a compressor available, you can make a boost leak tester out of simple parts from a local hardware store. It basically just pressurizes your system to help you listen for leaks.

It's vital when you have a turbo car.

Update I bough some stuff at the hardware and made the tool ill update tomorrow when I have a chance to test it

One thing you need to know is that you need to block off your PCV valve hose, and any other hoses coming from your turbo intake pipes going to the valve cover. Otherwise, you'll have oil flying all over the place from the dip stick. Also, start out at a low psi and move up to whatever the maximum psi you are wanting to run. A leak is usually very noticeable.
