As to the injectors further upstream:
This is actually better for all out power rather than spraying directly on the valve. The reason that factory engines spray right on the valve is for low and part throttle response and air atomization. Any engine that is not worried by such things will benefit from injectors further upstream (mainly drag motors and top speed motors). They will benefit because injectors further upstream will give better fuel atomization (under full throttle) and will help cool down the air/fuel mixture more.
Now when it comes to producing a piece I have to look at several things.
Mainly it is price vs performance for me. A fancy billet headflange with injector in stock location costs 5x more to produce than a 1/2" headflange. When my primary clients are drag guys who don't give a crap about low end then it is only logical to save them a nice chunk of change AND give them more power
Now when I am doing things for road race clients or guys who prefer a more streetable setup, I will put the injector back in factory location...
