if they have less lift and duration than the S5s i'm sure they would be fine

Jim Wolf cams
S3 cams-.442" LIFT / 260 DEG.DUR.
S3HL cams -.457" LIFT / 260 DEG.DUR.
S4 cams- .464" LIFT / 266 DEG.DUR.
S4HL cams -.484" LIFT / 266 DEG.DUR.
S5 cams- .503" LIFT / 281 DEG. DUR

C1 cams- .476" LIFT / 264 DEG. DUR.
C2 cams- .500" LIFT / 275DEG.DUR.
C3 cams- .526" LIFT / 285 DEG.DUR.

so by that rationale, C1 & C2 cams are fine without springs/retainers?? hmm..
also, what about the pistons? would you need notches for the valves?

wow, so the difference in lift is 20 thou higher the in the s4 HL than the regular s4 but with the same duration. I retract my previous statement about just being smaller than the s5 cams, but I do think the s4 HL would still be fine on a stock setup.

I ran mine like 8k miles on stock springs and retainers. Never had any issues. Took them in and out of my car like 3 times and even let my friend borrow them for his N/A SR20DE. His car was side by side with a stock VE with those cams, all through 5th gear. He had other bolt ons too, of course.

stock VE has 187 hp at the crank right?

seems like a drivers race to me, S4 HL with boltons should get 150-160 to the wheels, no? and when you're racing, you're in the upper part of the rev band anyway.. so the low end advantage of the VE's smaller cams is of no value here..

Who the hell runs a ve with an oem header and stock intake.

I ran s4s for more then 5 years, great cams. But u cant compare a de with cams to a ve.

When was the last time you say a de run 12s let alone mid to low 11s ?

Give it up man lol.
