Thread: Would you run these cams?

I would not run those on my engine and ask for a refund!

Did you see the damage prior to buying them?

Yah, rocker arm wear is the major issue. Then they will both tear each other up.

Quick answer: NO. I have some S4's and one of the cams has a slit in the middle of just one lobes sort of like a rod bearing. THOSE are fine to run. Your cams have damage that even oil cant help. It looks like after a while that metal in the last pic would make its way some where in your motor and not on the cam lol.

If I were being a cynic, I'd say that first lobe also shows more than 0.2mm wear to begin with making it out of spec. It seems like the owner might have even realized this and tried to hide it on some of the other lobes (even worse wear?) by filing down the section of the cam that would visibly show the wear and make it obvious.

They could also have reground the whole lobe...

Ive run cams with dings that bad and had no problems or rocker wear. Key is to file down any sharp areas sticking up above the surface of the lobe. Make the lobe flat with no jagged or sharp edges above it and it will be fine. The lobe is gonna push only on the higher spots so having dings and crap isnt going to matter. If you have enough uneveness it could cause the rocker to become unstable at higher revs but those cams dont look that bad.

Id say its up to you. I ran a set of cams that were dinged up like that on almost every lobe because of an overref and shattering every rocker and put 50k miles on it after that and didnt have any abnormal rocker wear and never had a problem of popping rockers out because of the damage.

It happens. You dont need to junk a cam just because of some minor damage. Shattering rockers can cause damage very quickly and easily. It happens. Id say file the edges down if there is any sticking up and throw em in. Id say run em for a 1000 miles or so and then check the rockers for wear and if you are getting wear then something is still not smooth.

to me, that makes sense that as long as there are only pits, and nothing sticking out (after filing) that it wouldn't cause much/any damage

Ashton I think you saw these in person. That built head I had laying around, these were in it.

The head has been ran through 3 different motors, yes if you look at it you can tell its damage from a rocker popping...

I personally saw the motor run these for about another 5,000 miles after it happened.

And ran them in my motor for about 2,000.

Never had an issue, if its that big of a deal to you, don't blame curtdragon, you can blame me, I told him about the couple knicks, but it isn't his fault.

I would personally run them again any day, as a matter of fact, if you want to sell them, give me a week for my tax return to come in, and you can get your refund from me buying them back, I will run them.

Not joking by the way, i will pm you when it comes in. Give me 2 weeks at the most.
