Thread: WTF! Please help.....car not starting

Started my car today and the car was idling weird and sounding funny......drove it for a little and the car started dying until it wouldn't start anymore.....there is gas coming out of the exhaust so if anyone knows wats wrong plz let me know....i got a 97 200sx w/ a bluebird sr20det motor.

you have flooded the motor. you need to pull the plugs and let the gas evaporate. Sounds like your ignition system is down.

Try a new dizzy and see if it fires up.

Possibly a leaking injector or ecu is in limp mode.

Is it daughterboarded/chipped? Do the fans come on as soon as you turn the key on?

Have the injectors been removed? The O-rings are very easy to damage.

Does it rev over 2500 rpm (before it flooded)?

Pulling the plugs and cleaning them (i use brake clean or similar) and turn it over with plugs out and injectors unplugged should clear any residual fuel, unless there is a injector leak in which case it will still get fuel and you may see it coming out the spark hole while cranking. Keep the HT leads clear or unplug the dizzy to avoid sparks catching any random fuel alight too.

Bit more info on mods and recent repairs if none of this applies and someone might find a soolution.

most likely a stuck open injector or bad injector oring. could be a wiring issue but it wouldnt have ran at all if it was.


if theres actual gas coming out of the exhaust it isnt cause your ignition system isnt working. there isnt much fuel that comes out of a normally working injector so if it was ignition you would just have a no start issue. not a runs worse and now dead.

i bet if you take your spark plugs out and turn the key on fuel will fill up one of the cylinders or even a few of them. but what ever you do dont crank it over if you do that.

What maf are u running make sure its wired right I had a similar problem with my car when I did my swap 3 years ago I had my wiring wrong and it was throwing my ecu into limp mode flooding it out and running terrible I used the jwt diagram for nine which later on found out were wrong and had two wires switched

how old is your cts? start with the easy things, dont start replacing things with new parts until you figured out the root cause this way you arent throwing money down the drain.

check for spark, see if its white, or if its a yellowish spark
if you have a fuel presure gauge check your fuel pressure
check your spark plugs my guess is they are obviously fouled (hold off on buying new ones just yet)
