Gtir t28 question
I was wondering if you have to run coolant lines through the turbo, or just the oil lines?

oil and coolant lines need to be run.

yes the turbo has oil and coolant line ports, however. The coolant is not an absolute necessity. Yes it does help prolong the life of the turbo but if you dont get on it then shut the car off right away and actually let it idle for 30 seconds or so before shutting it off then the turbo will probably last just as long.

I know where your coming from. Yes the coolant lines especially when using a non det are a PITA to run and its just extra crap. But if you have the stuff to do them, then do them. If your missing a bunch of lines and crap then you can get away without doing the coolant lines. Almost all the T3's are only oil cooled unless you get the BB GT series turbos, then they have both.

That Turbo is designed to have coolant run through it, therefore for I'm pretty sure it is a necessity to run them. If it wasn't, then it would be only oil cooled.

you do not have to run them it will not fail right away it will last many many months without failing depending on your driving and application and condition of the turbo itself. my cousin has been running a t28 like that for 2 years.

But why risk it? It's only like $100 for lines and you spend an afternoon doing it if you aren't good with cars yet...

Again never said you shouldnt run them. I only said its not a necessity. The turbos can run fine without them. My buddy ran his t25 without coolant lines for 2 years with zero issues when he pulled it off to swap it for a t28. It had no more shaft play than when he got it. The t28 is being ran that way as well. No issues.

The fact is sometimes $100 or so is too much for some people to spend on a non-necessity.

I dont want to run coolant lines because my water temps are high all the time. Its just a stock avenir swap, I think my motor would run cooler without running water through the turbo

Ashton is quite right. The water coolant jackets on all turbos are only there to prevent oil coking after engine shutdown. If you do the old-school turbo timer method, you won't need the water on any turbo.

That is the sole purpose of water-jacketing a turbo center section.
