Rebuild or not..???
Well I have been going back in forth on rebuilding or buying a JDM engine. I have an engine out of my car and the rings are gone, no knock, just burns oil. I am contemplating rebuilding this engine, BUT I don't know if it is going to be be cost effective to rebuild or just go and buy a JDM engine. Any ideas? I have about a grand or so to work with. I am not looking for a crazy huge build, something for about 300-400 hp. What are your ideas?

Id say cheapest you could do it is like 1800.

800 or so on machine shop, 400 pistons, 350 rods, 90 head gasket, 150 headstuds, 100 oem main studs and get some new bearings.

All this considering if you do the work your self.

it would be hard to even do a budget build for under $1000. You could always buy a avenier long block for around that price.

See thats what I was figuring. I think I am just going to get a JDM engine. Looks like you can get a DET motor for around 850 shipped these days. I think I may go that route.

Why use weak pistons and rods. If ur in there why not upgrade.

If thats the case run a stock jdm de, its good till like 350hp or so.

^ I agree, If I am going to do a rebuild I am going to use stronger pistons and rods.

Do you already have all the turbo stuff to make a DE turbo? Or are you looking to go

turbo? If you already have all the turbo stuff just to transfer to another motor, the most

effective & cheapest way to get to 300-400hp would be to buy a JDM 10:1 DE and boost

it with your turbo stuff. You can get a JDM de for around $400, then you have the other

$600 to play with. You could do just a basic rebuild to the DE,DET you already have for

around 400 but would be easier and quicker just to buy a JDM DE. It's all up to what you

want and already have.

I did my fully built motor for the following price

CP piston and Eagle rod combo from PoorBoysParts on ebay (awesome company btw with great deals) $740 shipped

ACL race main and rod bearings $97 shipped

Cosworth 87mmX1.1mm headgasket $157 shipped

Machine shop bore and hone to match pistons and just polish up the crank $140

Thats $1134

The only thing else i would recommend is to replace your oil pump with a ve oil pump, drive spacer and pulley to take care of what the de pump lacks in oiling to help extend the life of the bearings and so on. That stuff can be had for $150-200 used which is no big deal to use used parts.

Studs are not necessary. If you have never had yoru motor apart you can reuse your stock headbolts or spend the $125 on some Golden Eagle b16a studs or $175 on some Mazworx studs.

I have a turbo set up, just need a good long block. I was thinking of buying a DET and then parting out the turbo set up and injectors off of the motor and using my stuff.
